The Animals of Halloween

The Animals of Halloween 1 of 7

Nearly every Halloween display you'll come across features bats, cats, rats, spiders, or wolves. These animals have become cornerstones of Halloween tradition, featured in many scary stories, movies, and decorative displays across the country. The legends behind these creatures have been circulating for so long, our culture hardly remembers how they got started or why we are so afriad of these animals.

One reason is that each of the animals mentioned is incredibly intelligent. Another is that they are all nocturnal creatures, preferring the darkness of night to the broad daylight we live in. Both factors led cultures to paint them as the witch's famliar, creatures full of magic and dark puposes. Human beings tend to fear what they don't understand. Over time, legends have grown to justify our fears.
