To begin, the concept of air conditioning was first invented by the ancient Chinese, who used manually powered rotary fans to cool off. However, the first electrical air conditioner was invented and created in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. He designed it for use in a printing company in order to control the temperature and humidity of the paper. He soon realized that he could sell this invention to the masses for comfort purposes. Unfortunately, early air conditioners and refrigerators utilized these dangerous chemicals for cooling:

  • Ammonia
  • Propane
  • Methyl Chloride

In 1928, Thomas Midgley Jr. introduced Freon as a safer alternative, and the modern era of cool living was born.
