Several studies have been conducted which show that food dyes like Yellow #5 and Red #3 contain small traces of benzidine. Benzidine is known as a carcinogen, which means that it can cause cancer if humans are exposed to too much of it.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) knows this and still allows the production and consumption of these dyes.
