Methadone was made by chemists in Germany during World War II as a morphine substitute. It was offered in the U.S. as Dolophino in 1947 by Eli Lilly and was first used here as a long-acting painkiller for hospital patients.

In 1950, Methadone was first used in treating withdrawal symptoms in heroin and morphine addicts. It is offered in pill and liquid form.
