How Can You Prep Your Home for Cold Weather?

Heating System & Air Conditioning 1 of 9

Your heating and air conditioning systems are the first things you should take care of as you prepare your house for colder weather. Do a test run with your furnace to make sure it is working properly. Turn the thermostat to 80 degrees and see if you can hear the heat moving through the vents, and check to make sure the air that comes from them is warm.

You should also hose down the fan blades and condensing coils in your outdoor air conditioning unit to remove dirt, and cover the unit with a waterproof tarp to keep wet leaves, snow, and ice from damaging the coils with rust over the winter months.

Additional steps:

  • Change the air filters
  • Top off propane or oil furnaces
  • Remove objects that may be covering heating vents
  • Check for carbon monoxide leaks
