Fun Facts About Labor Day

A Holiday Spawned in Violence 1 of 10

Before Labor Day had become a viable concept, there had been a myriad of riots across the country related to the mistreatment of workers. In what many believe to be the first labor riot in 1872, Peter McGuire of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters took to the streets with 100,000 workers in what would spark a flame for similar uprisings across the country. In this tirade, he demanded a decrease in the long work day hours. Many believe it is this exact same McGuire that originally proposed the holiday.
