We all heard the tale grade school that Columbus set out to prove that the world was round, but this couldn't be further from the truth. A theory that was originally described in Washington Irving's 1828 biography of the explorer has since been shattered with evidence that popular astronomers and thinkers, such as Ptolemy and Aristotle, had full knowledge of the planet's shape about two centuries prior. On their voyage, his crew was never scared of falling off the map.
