What's the Big Deal with Pumpkin?

Pumpkin Pie 1 of 12

Ahhh, pumpkin pie, what would we do without you? This comfort food is so intrinsically associated with the harvest, Halloween, Thanksgiving, tradition, family, and fall in general that many other foods now emulate its popular pumpkin spice flavors.

This special pie blends pumpkin and spices into custard, which is baked in a pie shell and served with whipped cream. Its aroma derives from the cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.

The world's largest pumpkin pie, weighing a whopping 3,699 pounds and 20 feet in diameter, was baked in New Bremen, Ohio on September 25th, 2010. The pie's ingredients included:

  • 1,212 pounds of canned pumpkin
  • 2,796 eggs (233 dozen)
  • 109 gallons of evaporated milk
  • 525 pounds of sugar
  • 14.5 pounds of cinnamon
  • 7 pounds of salt
