Halloween has only existed in its candy-coated form since the 1800s, but its history goes back much further than that. Find out the real story behind this fun holiday and its most popular traditions.
The origin of Halloween can be traced all the way back to the Celts about 2,000 years ago. These barbaric warriors lived in the UK and worshiped pagan gods. November 1 marked the Celtic New Year; and on October 31, they held an event called "Samhain." On this day, they believed that ghosts of the dead returned to the earth. To celebrate, Celtic Druids (priests) built giant bonfires, sacrificed animals, and made predictions about the future.
