Taking advantage of your home's fireplace can be your greatest asset against rising heating bills. In order to get the best bang for your buck, you want to be sure to efficiently manage air circulation when doing so. The Department of Energy recommends following several steps when lighting your fireplace:

  • Open the nearest window slightly.
  • Close all doors in the room where the fire is lit.
  • Lower the thermostat to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
