One Direction is easily the most recognizable and successful act to come out of 'X Factor' so far, even though they only finished in third place in the show's seventh season. 1D, as the group is affectionately called, is an English-Irish boy band consisting of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They all initially auditioned for the show as solo acts, but at the suggestion of judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five boys formed a group; and a phenomena was born.
Once 'X Factor' ended, they signed on with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records and Columbia Records in North America. They were an instant success with their debut album 'Up All Night,' doing so well on the charts that they earned a spot in the Guinness World Records.
