Dude 1 of 10

Dude - noun, meaning "a reference to another man, sometimes with a surfer attitude"

In the 1880s, there were large numbers of Germans immigrating to the United States, during which time the German language began to influence our everyday communication. It is believed that "dude" comes from shorthand of the Germanic phrase "duden-pop," which translates to "blockhead." It was often used as a joke and somehow made it into mainstream dialogue.
