In February of 2009, Joaquin Phoenix notoriously appeared on 'The Late Show with David Letterman' while sporting a hobo beard, wearing dark sunglasses and acting weirdly detached and awkward. Joaquin was supposed to promoting his film 'Two Lovers,' but he came off like a raggedy, shell-shocked bum who may well have been stoned.
Dave, never one to back down from a challenging guest, relentlessly teased Joaquin to the audience's delight, but Joaquin kept acting increasingly strange and confused. Undoubtedly, the ultimate highlight from the spectacle had to be when Joaquin pulled gum from his mouth and stuck it right on Letterman's desk. After all was said and done, Letterman, in typical Dave fashion, closed out the interview by saying, "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight."
A year later, the faux-documentary 'I'm Still Here' was released, and Joaquin's infamous Letterman appearance was discovered to be an act with Joaquin fully consumed in his aspiring rapper character, but the memory of his crazy antics on 'The Late Show' lives on.
