Mardi Gras is an annual holiday with French Catholic origins that is celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday. Since Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, taking place approximately 40 days before Easter, Mardi Gras is a time to celebrate excess before Lent's period of fasting and prayer begins for certain groups in the Christian faith.
