While the tradition of wearing of birthstones has been around for centuries, changes have occurred over the years due to differing tastes and customs. Some designated stones have changed for certain months, depending on the culture and time period.

For example, the earliest birthstone list used throughout the 15th to 20th centuries looked like this:

  • January - garnet
  • February - amethyst, hyacinth, pearl
  • March - bloodstone, jasper
  • April - diamond, sapphire
  • May - emerald, agate
  • June - cat's eye, turquoise, agate
  • July - turquoise, onyx
  • August - sardonyx, carnelian, moonstone, topaz
  • September - chrysolite
  • October - opal, aquamarine
  • November - topaz, pearl
  • December - bloodstone, ruby
