On December 10, 1924, the very first gay rights organization, The Society for Human Rights, was founded in Chicago by Henry Gerber. Unfortunately, political pressure led the group to disband not long after receiving a charter from the state of Illinois.

Decades later, the first national gay and lesbian rights organizations were founded: the Mattachine Society in Los Angeles in 1950, and the Daughters of Bilitis in San Francisco in 1955.
