There's a trend in recent TV shows where the main character is playing the part the villain. It turns out that we love to root for a likeable character, even if he or she is promoting some really disturbing behavior.
One of the best examples of this phenomenon is "Breaking Bad." The character of Walter White started out as an innocent, hardworking guy, but he turned to making crystal meth to solve his problems. Somehow we're still rooting for this evil kingpin who's creating and distributing a highly dangerous drug.
