These lions favor the darkest of nights for hunting large mammals, such as zebras and buffalo. But they often come upon unfortunate humans. According to National Geographic, African Lions have killed over a thousand Tanzanians in the last twenty-five years. This vulnerable species' numbers have been reduced to about 35,000, due to habitat loss, ritual killing, and trophy hunting.
