The hookworm is a parasite that lives in the small intestine of mammals and drink the host's blood. There are two species of hookworms that can infect humans, both of which can cause iron deficiency anemia and intestinal inflammation. Severe infections can even lead to chest pain, vomiting, diarhhea and even heart failure. The disease is transmitted through fecal matter, and therefore is more common in areas without plumbing.
