7 Historic Duels to the Death

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr 1 of 8

In the past it was pretty commonplace for people to settle their differences with a duel to the death. These are seven of the most famous duels to the death that ever occured.

The most famous duel in American history took place between Alexander Hamilton and then Vice President Aaron Burr serving under Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton hated Burr who had campaigned against him in his bid for governor of New York. He thought if he challenged him to a duel he would restore his honor. At the time most duels of the sort didn't actually end in death and it is thought that Hamilton was simply going to shoot his gun in the air symbolically. But Burr had other plans and he shot Hamilton in the stomach. He died the next day.
