September 15, 2011 - The argument between PC gaming and console gaming is one that has raged for the past decade. People have gone back and forth about the pros and cons of each, so it's hard to say whether one is really better than the other. PC games tend to look better thanks to constantly upgraded graphics cards, and gamers typically have more precision thanks to the mouse. On the other hand, consoles are cheaper than a high-end PC, and the controllers are more ergonomic.
The choice between PC and console gaming really comes down to personal preference, but now you can have the best of both worlds as far as controllers are concerned. Splitfish originally introduced the 'FragFX Shark' controller last year for the PS3 and PC, and a similar version has finally arrived for the Xbox 360. You'll notice that the left-handed portion of the controller is essentially the left half of a typical console controller, and that the right half is a mouse with the standard four-button layout from the console controller. Note that lefties seem to be out of luck here.
At first this thing might seem odd, as it requires a surface to use the mouse and a free hand for the other portion of the controller. Aside from this one negative however, I think the FragFX Shark is absolutely brilliant. The controller works with the console or a PC, is optimized for first-person shooters, and allows for button customization and mouse sensitivity adjustments on the fly. In addition, the controller gets 50 hours of play time (double the hours of gameplay of the standard Xbox 360 controller) or 500 hours of standby on two AA batteries. Both portions of the FragFX are wireless and are set up for plug and play.
The FragFX Shark is really a great idea, and the only complaint I have is the price. You can pick up a standard controller for around $40 and a mouse shouldn't be more than $25, so charging $90 plus shipping for the Shark seems a bit excessive. Sure this is probably the ultimate game controller, but there's no way I'm paying that kind of money when I can get by with my current options. If you have some cash to blow on a gaming accessory however, order a FragFX Shark today and you won't regret it.
