Are gender specific indefinite pronouns encouraged in an APA-formatted paper?
Many professors may not know some of the more recent additions of gender neutral pronouns, like ze or hir, but gender-neutral pronouns are generally a wise decision in APA-formatted papers, unless the pronoun is referring to a specific person earlier in the text.
