About State Fair
State fairs began as competitive exhibitions of livestock in competitions. This later expanded to competition in categories such as baked goods, jams, jellies and crafts. Carnival rides, games, music, races and other activities later were included in fairs. The first official state fair was in 1849 in Detroit, Michigan.
