About 2011
2011 (MMXI in roman numerals) is the 2011th year according to the Gregorian Calendar. It began on a Sunday and was not a leap year. 2011 was also named the International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry. One of the most impactful events of the year was a 9.1 magnitude earthquake and a resulting tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011.
About Veterans Day
The first Veterans Day, then called Armistice Day, was on Nov. 11, 1919. Its purpose was to commemorate the signing of the temporary halt to hostilities between the Allied forces and Germany. This treaty effectively ended what was called at the time the "Great War," or "The War to End All Wars," or as we call it today, World War I. The treaty was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. After it became apparent wars were not a thing of the past, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices our service members have made all over the world.
