Studies of lions show that they do purr for the same reasons that smaller cats do. The purr sounds more like a growl though.

Lions do not purr. They do, however, meow (as cubs), hiss, snarl, yowl, grunt, and roar. ChaCha on!

They can't. Only the smaller cats - not just house cats, but also bobcats, ocelots, lynxes and others have what it takes to purr.
