Solar energy would decrease our reliance on fossil fuels because heating for homes and electricity could all be from the sun.

Energy is used to do work. In our modern lives we are more and more preoccupied with finding new sources of energy to heat our buildings and move our machines, including cars. It has trouble competing with fossil fuels due to the massive government subsidies that fossil fuels receive as compared to the renewable energy industry.
