After 10 to 14 days, the infected mosquito can transmit West Nile Virus to people and animals through its bite. West Nile virus is not spread from person-to-person or animal-to-person contact. Avoid mosquito bites by using repellent and wearing long sleeves. In mild cases people experience symptoms such as fever and aches that pass on their own, although even healthy people have become sick for several weeks.
