Can you take antibiotics on birth control?
Some drugs may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills, which may result in pregnancy. Use a second form of birth control if you are taking: a penicillin antibiotic such as amoxicillin, a tetracycline antibiotic such as demeclocycline, a barbiturate such as amobarbital, Rifadin, Dilantin, or Tegretol. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

About Birth Control
Birth control refers to the interception of a female egg and a male sperm so that embryo implantation, resulting in pregnancy, does not occur. Birth control has been practiced for thousands of years, and there are various methods which have evolved, including birth control pills, patches, and shots, as well as condoms, diaphragms, and birth control rings. Methods that don't require additional contraception include early withdrawal and abstinence.
About Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, or the release of an egg into the ovaries. Birth control pills contain hormones -- estrogen, progestin or both -- which prevent the egg from being released before menstruation. If no egg is released, a sperm cannot join with it. Hense, pregnancy is prevented. There are many different pills, so consult with your doctor to choose one that is right for you.
