About Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was an order issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War that declared the freedom of 3.1 million of the nation’s 4 million slaves. The Proclamation immediately freed 50,000 slaves and the rest were freed as Union armies advanced. It was on September 22, 1862, that Lincoln announced he would issue a formal emancipation of all slaves in Confederate states by January 1, 1863.
