The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and aeronautics and aerospace research, was founded on July 29, 1958 and became operational on October 1, 1958. On April 15, 2010, President Obama announced the administration's plans for NASA, including a promise of $6 billion in additional funding and calling for the development of a new heavy lift rocket program to be ready for construction by 2015. NASA, also known as The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is a government agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program. NASA was created on July 29, 1959 as a result of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). NASA headquarters are located in Washington D.C. The agency has a budget of around $17 billion dollars a year.
