Do I have to have a filter in a fish tank for fish out of a river?
It wouldn't hurt but may not be necessary. Tap water and well water contain a lot of dissolved minerals and solids like calcium and magnesium at levels that are not healthy for some fish. Distilled Water could be a better option! ChaCha!

About Water
Water is by far the most important substance on Earth. Water covers over 70 percent of the planet and makes up between 50 and 75 percent of the human body. In fact, it's one of the only things we are positive needs to be present for life to exist. When scientists look for life in our solar system and on exoplanets, they are looking for liquid water.
