Does 200 horsepower literally mean the power of 200 horses?

Horsepower Horsepower was originally defined to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses in continuous operation. Stevenson and Wassersug observe that for sustained activity, a work rate of about 1 hp per horse is consistent with agricultural advice from both 19th and 20th century sources. So, while it is an estimation, the general idea is that 1hp is the work rate of one horse. ChaCha!
