Civil War The Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 near Charleston South Carolina was the first battle of the American Civil War. Only 11 people died and it was led by P.G.T. Beauregard who was the first general officer of the newly constructed Confederate States of America. After the battle, there was big support from both North and South for further military action. Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the rebellion caused an additional 4 states to secede. Just ask us!
