Has there been an increase in earthquake activity in 2011?
The USGS estimates millions of earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes. As more and more seismographs are installed in the world, more earthquakes can be and have been located. However, the number of large earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 and greater) has stayed relatively constant in 2011. ChaCha

About Earthquake
An Earthquake (also known as a quake or tremor) is a shift in the earth's crust that releases a substantial amount of energy. The size, type and frequency of an earthquake is measured by its seismic activity. The shifting of the surface during an earthquake can cause catastrophic damage to any nearby population. The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. The Richter scale rates the size of the earthquake from 1 to 10+ with 10+ being the worst.
About Earthquakes
Earthquakes are seismic events which rattle the earth. Tectonic plates which press and grind in the Earth's crust release incredible amounts of energy, causing earthquakes. Pictures often show devastating results, depending on the quality of housing prevalent in the earthquake area.
