How are the carbon cycle and the flow of energy similar?
Carbon dioxide is recycled in the carbon cycle as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are oxidized (burned) to produce carbon dioxide and water. Oxygen released by photosynthesis is utilized in respiration as an electron acceptor to release chemical energy stored in organic compounds. Dead organisms are consumed by detritivores, scavengers, and decomposers.
