Bone marrow is where blood cells are made. When you have leukemia, the bone marrow starts to make a lot of abnormal white blood cells, called leukemia cells.

Leukemia is a type of cancer that involves the blood and tissue that forms the blood and bone marrow. The cause of leukemia is unknown, but certain risk factors can cause it. Some risk factors include exposure to radiation, which include surviving an atomic bomb blast, diagnostic x-rays and radiation therapy. Other risk factors are smoking, benzene, chemotherapy and even Downs syndrome.
