How did a rock get its name?

Rate This Answer

English has two words rock, both of uncertain origin. The older meaning "sway", from the 11th century, goes back to a prehistoric Germanic base "rukk" meaning "move". Rock as in "stone", from the 14th century, was borrowed from Old French "rocque". This has relatives in Italian rocca and Spanish roca. The French word is also the ultimate source of English rococo.
