About Virginia
The Commonwealth of Virginia is a U.S. state on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern United States. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond. Virginia was one of the Thirteen Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was the Confederate capital and the state of West Virginia separated. The first people are estimated to have arrived in Virginia over 12,000 years ago.
About Washington
Washington is the northwestern most state in the United States. It was the 42nd state to join the Union in 1889. Often referred to as "Washington state" or "the state of Washington" to differentiate it from Washington, D.C., it is the only state named for a U.S. president, after George Washington.
