Kim Jong il Kim Il Sung. He became leader when his Father Kim Il-sung died, on 8 July 1994, at the age of 82 from a heart attack, it took three years for Kim Jong-il to consolidate his power. He officially took the titles of General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defense Commission on 8 October 1997.
