How did kim jong Il become leader?
Kim Il Sung. He became leader when his Father Kim Il-sung died, on 8 July 1994, at the age of 82 from a heart attack, it took three years for Kim Jong-il to consolidate his power. He officially took the titles of General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defense Commission on 8 October 1997.

About Kim Jong il
Kim Jong il was the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea, from 1994 until his death in 2011. Known for combining communism, unauthorized nuclear weapons program and general craziness, he is thought to have died from complications from cancer on December 17 2011.
