World War I World War I was a period of intense nativism in the US. The Anglo-Saxon majority in America viewed anything or anyone that was foreign as potentially subversive. Two of the most extreme measures taken to “protect” the United States against potential subversives were the Espionage and Sedition Acts. This led to legal discrimination and criminalization of immigrants.
