The Confederate forces lost the Battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. The Confederates did not win another significant battle after their loss at Gettysburg. Also this was the last serious threat to Washington, D.C. The Union had protected the back entrance to the capital. This had a great psychological impact on the Confederate troops.
