The BP oil spill started on 20 April 2010, when methane gas from the well, under high pressure, shot all the way up and out of the drill column, expanded onto the platform, and then ignited and exploded. 11 workers were never found. ChaCha!

It was caused by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig Explosion which cause oil to gush into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, for months. The final tally of oil spilled into the Gulf was 218,400,000 gallons, or 5,200,000 barrels of oil, according to CNN.
