The Puritans were a significant group of English Protestants who saw themselves as the last bastion of pure Christianity in the 16th and 17th centuries. In U.S. history, the Puritans migrated to New England from England (specifically James and Laud) in the two decades from 1620 to 1640 in hopes of religious utopia where they would be free to practice the Puritan religion.
