How did the War of 1812 affect African Americans?
During the War of 1812 black men accounted for 15-20 percent of enlisted men on all ships/stations in the US Navy. At sea a man's skin color was much less important than his skills/abilities. While prejudice and racism existed, by 1814 black & white soldiers/sailors fought & died side by side in line of battle and on warship gun decks. ChaCha on!
