How do I fix a hole in dry wall that is about 1 and a half inch wide?

Put some of the drywall compound on the putty knife, & work a thin coat over the hole. The first coat should be no more than 1/8-inch thick, & allow it to completely dry. Apply a second coat, it should be slightly higher than the surface of the wall.
