How do we breathe in oxygen if the atmosphere is 85% nitrogen?
Nitrogen composes 78.08% of the earths atmosphere. This nitrogen has no effect on the workings of our body and so it is emitted again when we breathe out. The only gas in the air which is used by our bodies is oxygen which, when we breathe in, is absorbed by the lungs and passed to the bloodstream.
