How do you cite a poem within a text?

Rate This Answer

Cite the poem within the text of your paper using the poem's author, year of publication and page number. You can use the author's name and publication year to introduce the quotation or put the citation in parentheses after the quotation. The first example: "In Eliot (1991), Prufrock said, 'No! I am no Prince Hamlet; nor was meant to be,' (p. 3)." The second example: "'No! I am no Prince Hamlet; nor was meant to be,' (Eliot, 1991, p. 3)."
