Move counter-clockwise around an imaginary circle of radius 1 (called the unit circle) the appropriate number of degrees. The co-ordinates of this point on the unit circle are the values of the sine (the y value) and cosine (the x value) of the angle. The value of the tangent function is the value of the sine divided by the value of the cosine.
