Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein & collect there.

About Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, or the release of an egg into the ovaries. Birth control pills contain hormones -- estrogen, progestin or both -- which prevent the egg from being released before menstruation. If no egg is released, a sperm cannot join with it. Hense, pregnancy is prevented. There are many different pills, so consult with your doctor to choose one that is right for you.
