A filibuster can help protect the rights of the minority party by keeping debate open on an issue presented, delaying a vote until the arguments are fully laid out by the minority vote in an effort to win over votes from the majority party. The longest filibuster was by Senator Strom Thurmond which lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes in 1957.
